West Norfolk 2nds 25 Wisbech 2nds 0
West Norfolk 2nds fielded a team spearheaded by a very experienced pack of forwards and they made a useful looking Wisbech side apply themselves to defending a series of well constructed rolling mauls for the first third of this match. Half of the home side starting eight, Williams, Nimmo, Packwood and Martin must have all played many games of rugby before the more junior members of this team saw the light of day. Nevertheless the balance and spirit of the side is excellent and it is evident that they they enjoy playing and supporting each other.
Unsurprisingly West Norfolk opened the scoring from a forward drive , following a line out. Savage, who was prominent in the close quarter exchanges throughout, got the touch down.
In addition to working hard to control the West Norfolk packs’ incessant rolling maul up front, the visitors outsides defended with spirit and deserved great credit for repeatedly repelling West Norfolk attacks when the ball was moved wide.
Paton on the left wing for the home side has great pace which he used to good effect with some very penetrating runs while Andy Saunders, Richard Bailey and Connor Tuck all came close to breaching the visitors defence.
Calow kicked a penalty when a pressed Wisbech defence fell offside to give the home side a half time 8 – 0 advantage.
Wisbech enjoyed a lengthy spell of territorial advantage early in the second half but were unable to convert this into points thanks to some excellent defence by the home side, Evans, Hart and O’Sullivan were prominent in this respect.
John Martin, having his best game for the club for some time carried the ball with aggression and purpose and provided a target for the rest of the home side pack.
West Norfolk put more points on the board when Nichols proved too strong for the Wisbech cover and went over near the corner for an excellent try. Calow managed to convert.
West Norfolk newcomer James Eatock made some impressive runs on the left wing and was rewarded with a try when he beat the visitors cover, then was unlucky not to get a second when he was harshly judged to knocked on when about to score following a clever chip through by the evergreen Waterfield.
Nimmo, although operating with a knee injury which restricted his mobility, did well to dominate the line out and Ali Smith was equally effective at centre in the second half as he had been at scrum half previously.
Kevin Edwards as always refereed fairly and firmly and could be pleased with a good afternoons work which resulted in an enjoyable game for both players and spectators.
