27th February West Norfolk 16 Wymondham 20
West Norfolk had to wait an extra couple of weeks to play Norfolk rivals Wymondham at Gatehouse Lane after the game had been re-arranged due to snow. It was always going to be a tough afternoon but with recent victories at home West were confident that this run would continue. Both teams started in typical spirited fashion, with the Wymondham forwards making some physical runs and West putting in some hard tackles. But despite Wymondham having more possession in the first quarter it was West who took the lead through a well struck penalty by Mike Hogan. Eight minutes later it was Wymondham who took charge with a well structured try by Vincent who combined well with the Wymondham back row and Wyatt struck a good conversion to give Wymondham the lead. Moments later this lead was cut short by a point after another penalty by Hogan. With half time approaching it was West who took the initiative after the forwards and backs combined well to set up a ruck close to the Wymondham try, with the ball being laid off to Tulip Man of the Match Williamson who bulldozed his way over for West’s first try. Unfortunately Hogan was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt. The second half saw West start in spritely fashion and although we’re not playing anywhere near to their potential created countless overlaps, but as was going to be the case for the rest of the game, managed to throw them all away. This was not going to be the case for the opposition who structured their own overlap and put Cousens in the corner for Wymondham’s second try. The restart prompted West in to emergency action and with some strong attacks West were rewarded with a penalty to the left of the post. Unfortunately the normally dead eyed Hogan just missed the penalty but not wanting to miss a opportunity from the twenty two drop out West attacked again through Thurston, who set up a clean ruck for fellow flanker Langley to score. The conversion was missed and the game was still there for someone to win. Unfortunately, it was not West, to go on and win the game. As has been the case for much of this season West failed to clear there line in pressure situations and again coughed up the ball to the giant handed dinosaur Morfoot who took his chance and score the decisive try for Wymondham to go on and win the game. This was a very disappointing result for West who now have to dig deep and produce some much needed wins in order to stay in LNE3. They will look to start this battle for security against Wanstead at home on Saturday.
